Newest Young Skeptics Chapter Launches in California Today

Elementary school kids on the west coast will get a taste of critical thinking today, courtesy of Young Skeptics.

This afternoon at Harloe Elementary School in Arroyo Grande, Califonia, the first satellite chapter of Young Skeptics will launch, kicking off the current phase of a national expansion that’s been in the works for over a year.  Members of Atheists United of San Luis Obispo have come together to support the new chapter and will debut a revamped curriculum in the after-school club.

Young Skeptics_Option_4The club will meet for 90 minutes once per month, and will cover topics such as:

  • Fact vs Opinion
  • Evidence
  • Reasoning & Communication
  • What is a Skeptic?
  • What is a Scientist?

Young Skeptics has been working on national expansion ever since the completion of their pilot club in Churchville, New York in 2015.  Rather than focusing on growing the local club, the directors agreed that expanding nationally would be more effective and enable the club to reach more kids interested in critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and science.  As part of that effort, Young Skeptics brought in a new Curriculum Director to redesign the current lessons the group used in its pilot and help create facilitator guides and a chapter start-up kit.

Young Skeptics plans to continue its expansion and has several interested groups in their pipeline who want to launch clubs in their local schools.  If you’re interested in starting a club in your area, send an email to contact@youngskeptics.net or fill out the contact form on their website.

If you’re not interested in starting a club but wish to support their expansion efforts, Young Skeptics has recently launched a fundraising campaign that has some associated perks you can earn depending on donation level, including the ability to suggest lesson topics, Young Skeptics shirts, and long-term sponsorship listings on their website and in presentations.

  1. Needs a better name, though.

“College for Kids! … Giving your child the best chance at college or a skilled trade while helping them succeed in school. All done with fun — and snacks!”
