Spending Thanksgiving with Family Who Disapprove of your Atheism? Send Them a Free Book to Help

UnderstandingAnAtheistAs most of my readers know, I published my first book in 2014, titled Understanding an Atheist: A Practical Guide to Relating to Nonbelievers.  I wrote the book not to be showered with riches (any author would be crazy to think that’s going to happen), but instead, I wrote it to help atheists handle potential conflicts within their circle of family and friends.  The book is intended for the religious who have trouble accepting their nonreligious loved ones, whether internally or with outward displays of disapproval.  It answers a few of the most popular questions the religious might have for nonbelievers but are afraid to ask or feel uncomfortable bringing up.  It’s intended to be a conversation starter — the first step in improving or repairing relationships that have been damaged because of religious differences.

Since my intent is to help my fellow atheists repair relationships, especially this time of the year, I’m extending an offer to enable them to do that.  If you have a religious loved one who would benefit from reading Understanding an Atheist in preparation for spending the holidays with an atheist, I’d like to send him/her a free copy of the book, along with a personal letter from me.  The letter will explain why it’s being sent and from who.  This is your opportunity to take the first step in overcoming the religious impasse between you and your theist family members.

In order to take advantage of this offer, please send me an email at contact@secularvoices.org with “UAA Holidays” as the subject. Please include the recipient’s name and mailing address (US only please) as well as a message explaining your relationship with that person, why you want to send the book, and if you’re willing, an example of what kind of conflict you’ve experienced with him/her as part of your atheist/theist disagreement.

If you’re using this as a way to come out as an atheist to your family, as many have done in the past, please also indicate that in your email.

All submissions must be received by 11/9/16 in order to be prepared and shipped in time for Thanksgiving (I’ll be out of the country 11/12-19, so I will not be able to honor late submissions).  Any emails received after the deadline will be considered for a Christmas giveaway if inventory allows.

This is my holiday gift to the loyal readers of SecularVoices and to those of you who could use a little help during the holidays from someone who’s been there.  Please share this offer with anyone you think might be interested, and have a great Thanksgiving!

  1. A very kind and generous offer. It’s also refreshing to learn about a book “explaining the atheist” which isn’t coming from the perspective that atheists are rebelling against what they know to be true. A practical approach for a practical guide.

  2. I’m sure the Venn diagram overlap of people who need this book and people likely to actually read it is very small-but not infinitely so.
